LouAnn's Art Story
As a young girl I was influenced by my Aunt, Joan King Orme, a professional artist and illustrator. I was always drawing in various sketch books and had interest in oil painting. I dabbled in art throughout my educational journey...Design at the Fashion Institute in Los Angeles and some courses with Conceptual Artist George Ketterl at Bakersfield State College. I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Arts/Sociology and Masters in Education Administration.
Later on in years, I was fortunate to attend a week-long class on Lucca, Italy, taught by John DelMonte, a professional artist and teacher at the Art of Institute of Pittsburgh. John started this class in the quaint village over 50 years ago. Lucca is also the home of Puccini, the magnificent opera composer. You can see more of the art class I attended in Lucca here. They should film a movie about him!
When I retired from a long career in Education, I began oil and pencil painting as a hobby, inspired by my many trips to Europe and the country, romantic, shabby chic style movement.
I started traveling to Europe in 1973 at age 19 when my sister and I backpacked through 9 countries. I've now been 9 times and enjoy taking the photos of the beautiful landscapes, architecture and charming places along the way. Although I've given up the backpacking in exchange for beautiful hotels, I always appreciate the landscape. I developed Ciaotraveler blog in 1999 to share photos of the beautiful landscapes, villages and storefronts. These are my inspirations for many paintings.
I taught myself colored pencil methods reading Ann Kullberg books. While I love to draw, I had to learn the methods and techniques of colored pencil painting.
For oil painting, I often use Gallery Wrapped Canvas, although more expensive, it doesn't require expensive framing. All my canvases are triple-primed with gesso and I use only artist-grade quality oil paints.
Colored pencil art can be considered painting too. Each piece takes many hours to produce with layers of different artist-grade colored pencils. Artist grade colored pencils are mostly oil or wax based. When solvents are applied, it's much like a painting. I use quality special Stonehenge acid-free cold press paper for each painting. All of my work is presented matted with acid-free materials. They should last many many years when kept out of direct sunlight.
